Staking vs Liquid Staking: What's the Difference?

Native staking locks your coins while they earn rewards; liquid staking gives you a tradable token (an LST) representing your stake, so your capital stays usable in DeFi. The price of that flexibility is extra risk: liquid staking adds smart-contract risk and the chance the token trades below the value of the stake it represents. Native staking suits holders who won't need access to their coins before an unbonding period completes; liquid staking suits people who will actively use that capital in DeFi.

What Is Native Staking?

Native staking is the mechanism built into every proof-of-stake network: you lock or delegate coins to a validator, the coins help secure the chain, and the protocol pays rewards. Your coins stay at your address, but they are locked — you cannot sell or move them until you unstake and wait out the network's unbonding period (7 days on BNB Chain, 14 on TRON, roughly 2–3 days on Solana, a variable exit queue on Ethereum).

Its defining feature is simplicity. There is no extra layer between you and the protocol: no contract to trust, no secondary token to track, nothing to go wrong except the network itself.

What Is Liquid Staking?

Liquid staking protocols stake coins on your behalf and issue you a liquid staking token (LST) in return — a receipt that represents your staked position plus accumulating rewards. Because the LST is an ordinary token, you can sell it, use it as DeFi collateral, or provide liquidity with it, all while the underlying stake keeps earning. When you want out, you redeem the LST through the protocol or simply sell it on the market, often skipping the unbonding wait entirely.

Some users go a step further and restake their LSTs into additional protocols for extra yield — a higher-risk strategy, since each added protocol brings its own penalty conditions and smart-contract exposure (see the restaking glossary entry).

The two additions on the liquid side deserve emphasis. Smart-contract risk means a bug or exploit in the liquid staking protocol can lose funds regardless of how well the underlying chain behaves. De-peg risk means that in stressed markets, holders rushing to exit can push the LST's market price below the value of the stake backing it — exactly when you most want your money out.

When Does Liquid Staking Make Sense?

Liquid staking earns its complexity when you will actually use the liquidity. If you actively deploy capital in DeFi — borrowing against collateral, providing liquidity, layering yields — an LST lets one balance do two jobs. It also suits people who want staking exposure but cannot tolerate a multi-day exit wait.

If your plan is to hold a coin for years and collect rewards, the LST's flexibility sits unused while its risks remain fully active. You would be taking on smart-contract and de-peg exposure in exchange for a feature you never touch.

How Do You Decide Between Them?

Three questions do most of the work. Will you need access to this capital before an unbonding period completes? Would you actually use a liquid staking token in DeFi — or would the flexibility sit unused while its risks stay active? And can you explain the protocol you would be trusting, why its LST could trade below the underlying stake, and how you would exit in a stressed market? Simplicity weighs toward native staking; capital efficiency weighs toward liquid staking — the weighting is yours to make. The unbonding wait, often framed as a drawback, also works as protection against panic-selling.
