Seed Phrase

In Brief
A sequence of 12 to 24 randomly generated words that serves as the master key to your crypto wallet. Anyone with your seed phrase can access your funds, so it must be kept offline and private.

What Is a Seed Phrase?
A seed phrase — also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic phrase — is a sequence of 12 to 24 randomly generated words that serves as the master backup for a crypto wallet. It is generated when you create a non-custodial wallet and encodes your wallet's private keys in a human-readable format.
Anyone who has access to your seed phrase has full control over every account and asset in your wallet. It is the single most important piece of information in self-custody crypto.
How Is a Seed Phrase Generated?
Seed phrases follow the BIP-39 standard, which defines a wordlist of 2,048 common English words. Your wallet software uses a cryptographically secure random number generator to select words from this list. The resulting phrase deterministically derives all of your wallet's private keys.
| Phrase Length | Entropy | Security Level |
|---|---|---|
| 12 words | 128 bits | Very strong |
| 18 words | 192 bits | Extremely strong |
| 24 words | 256 bits | Maximum |
How to Store Your Seed Phrase Safely
Write it down on paper — Never store it digitally or take a screenshot
Use a metal backup — Fireproof and waterproof seed phrase storage plates
Store in multiple secure locations — Protect against fire, flood, or theft
Never share it with anyone — No legitimate app, support team, or person needs it
Never enter it online — Only enter your seed phrase directly in your own wallet app

Seed Phrase and Trust Wallet
When you create a new wallet in Trust Wallet, you are given a 12-word seed phrase. Trust Wallet never stores or has access to your seed phrase — it exists only on your device. If you lose your phone, you can fully restore your wallet on any device by entering your seed phrase in the Trust Wallet app.
