요약

A genesis block is the first block ever recorded on a blockchain — block zero, hardcoded into the protocol, with no previous block to reference — and every later block traces its history back to it.

Genesis Block

What Is a Genesis Block?

A genesis block is the very first block of a blockchain — block zero, the foundation every later block builds on. Unlike every block after it, it references no previous block; it's hardcoded into the network's software as the agreed starting point of the ledger.

Because each block contains the hash of the one before it, the entire chain is anchored to the genesis block. Verify the chain of hashes back to genesis and you've verified the whole history — that anchoring is what makes a blockchain's past so hard to rewrite.

Why the Genesis Block Matters

The Most Famous Example

Bitcoin's genesis block famously embeds a newspaper headline about bank bailouts — a permanent, verifiable timestamp and a statement of purpose written into the first entry of the ledger. Its coins are also unspendable, a quirk that adds to its status as a monument rather than a normal block. Every blockchain since has its own genesis block, though few carry a message.

Genesis Blocks and Trust Wallet

Every network Trust Wallet supports — 100+ blockchains — starts from its own genesis block, and every balance you hold in self-custody is provable against that chain of history. You don't need to think about block zero day to day; it's simply the bedrock your keys and transactions rest on.
