The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is the runtime that executes smart contracts on Ethereum — and because EVM-compatible chains run the same bytecode, apps, tokens, and wallets built for one work across all of them.

EVM

What Is the EVM?

The EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) is the runtime environment that executes smart contracts on Ethereum. Every node on the network runs the same virtual machine, processes the same instructions, and arrives at the same result — which is how thousands of independent computers agree on a single shared state.

Developers write contracts in languages like Solidity, which compile down to EVM bytecode. When you interact with a dApp, you're sending a transaction that tells the EVM which contract code to run and with what inputs; gas fees meter the computation so no program can run forever.

How the EVM Works

  1. A developer deploys compiled bytecode to the chain, where it lives at a contract address.

  2. Users send transactions that call the contract's functions.

  3. Every validating node executes the same bytecode deterministically — same input, same output, everywhere.

  4. Gas limits and fees price each computational step, keeping the network usable and spam expensive.

Why "EVM-Compatible" Matters

Many other blockchains — including major smart-contract networks and Layer 2 rollups — implement the same virtual machine. Because they run the same bytecode, contracts, tokens, developer tools, and wallet addresses carry over between them with little or no change. That shared standard is why one wallet address often works across dozens of networks, and why new chains adopt the EVM to inherit an existing ecosystem overnight.

The EVM and Trust Wallet

Trust Wallet supports Ethereum and the major EVM-compatible networks among its 100+ blockchains, with a dApp browser for interacting with smart contracts and a Security Scanner that reviews transactions before you sign. Same keys, same address format, many chains — with you in control of the signature every time.
