How does smart money tracking work?
On-chain analytics platforms analyze wallet activity and historical performance to identify wallets that may have a track record of successful trades. They can then monitor those wallets and surface notable transactions, sometimes as they happen.
Traders may follow smart-money wallets to identify potential trends or discover tokens, including newly launched tokens and memecoins, earlier in their lifecycle. The activity is a research signal, not a substitute for doing your own research.
Example
Suppose a wallet bought several tokens before their prices increased significantly. An analytics platform might label that wallet as smart money based on its historical activity.
If the wallet later buys a new token, the transaction may be surfaced as a potential early signal. However, the token could still fall in value, and the wallet's previous success does not mean the new trade will be profitable.
