En resumen

PnL, win rate, and drawdown are key metrics for evaluating a trader's historical performance and risk. Learn what each means and how to read them together.

PnL, Win Rate & Drawdown

PnL, win rate, and drawdown are common metrics used to evaluate a trader's historical performance and risk. PnL (profit and loss) shows how much a trader has gained or lost over a given period. Win rate shows the percentage of trades that were profitable. Drawdown measures the decline from a portfolio's peak value to a subsequent low point.

Together, these metrics provide a broader picture of returns, consistency, and historical downside. No single metric tells you the full story.

Why each metric matters

  • PnL — Shows the trader's overall profit or loss, but does not show how much risk was taken to achieve that result.

  • Win rate — Shows how frequently trades were profitable. A high win rate can still result in losses if losing trades are significantly larger than winning trades.

  • Drawdown — Shows how much an account or portfolio declined from a previous peak. It can help illustrate the size of losses a follower might have experienced during a difficult period.

How to read PnL, win rate, and drawdown together

Consider two traders with similar returns but very different drawdowns. The trader with the larger drawdown experienced a greater decline from their previous peak, even if their overall PnL is similar.

For example, a trader with +200% PnL, a 90% win rate, and a 70% drawdown has achieved a large historical return but has also experienced a substantial decline from a previous peak. Looking at PnL or win rate alone would not show that downside.

When evaluating a trader, consider PnL, win rate, drawdown, track record, trading strategy, and risk level together rather than relying on a single metric.
