概要

A mnemonic (mnemonic phrase) is the human-readable list of words — usually 12 or 24 — that represents a wallet's master key under the BIP-39 standard. It's the technical term for a seed phrase or recovery phrase.

Mnemonic

What Is a Mnemonic?

A mnemonic, or mnemonic phrase, is a list of ordinary words — typically 12 or 24 — that encodes the master secret of a crypto wallet in a form humans can read and write down. It's the technical name for what's commonly called a seed phrase or recovery phrase.

The mnemonic exists because raw private keys are long, random strings that are easy to mistype. Converting that randomness into a short list of common words makes wallet backups far easier and less error-prone — while remaining just as secure.

How Does a Mnemonic Work?

  1. The wallet generates a random number (entropy) when you create it.

  2. That number is mapped to words from a fixed list using the BIP-39 standard.

  3. The result is your mnemonic phrase (e.g. 12 or 24 words).

  4. The phrase deterministically derives all your private keys and addresses.

  5. Entering the same phrase into any compatible wallet restores the same accounts.

What Is BIP-39?

BIP-39 (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 39) is the standard that defines how mnemonics are generated from a fixed list of 2,048 words. Because it's a shared standard, a mnemonic from one BIP-39-compatible wallet can usually be restored in another — improving portability and reducing lock-in.

Mnemonic vs Seed Phrase vs Recovery Phrase

Term Emphasis
Mnemonic phraseThe technical, BIP-39 word-list format
Seed phraseThat it "seeds" your private keys
Recovery phraseThat it restores (recovers) your wallet

All three refer to the same secret words — different names for one concept.

Keeping Your Mnemonic Safe

Anyone with your mnemonic can access your funds, so treat it like the master key it is: write it down offline, store it securely, never enter it into untrusted sites, and never share it. Losing it (with no other backup) means losing access to your funds permanently.

Mnemonics and Trust Wallet

Trust Wallet uses a BIP-39 mnemonic (your secret recovery phrase) as the master backup for your wallet. Because it follows the standard, you control a portable, self-custodied key to your assets across 100+ blockchains. Trust Wallet never has access to your mnemonic and will never ask for it — keep it offline and private, and only you can ever access your funds.
