概要

A sniper bot buys a token the instant it launches, often in the same block liquidity is added. Learn how memecoin sniping works, why it's risky, and how self-custody checks help.

Sniper Bot / Sniping

A sniper bot is an automated trading tool designed to buy a newly launched token as quickly as possible, often when liquidity is added or trading is enabled. Sniper bots are commonly associated with memecoin launches, where traders may try to enter a market before a large number of other buyers.

Sniping can be extremely high-risk because automated purchases can happen before there is enough information to evaluate a token, its smart contract, liquidity, or the people behind the project.

How Do Sniper Bots Work?

A sniper bot monitors blockchain activity for predefined conditions, such as a token becoming tradeable or liquidity being added to a decentralized exchange.

When those conditions are detected, the bot can automatically submit a transaction to buy the token. Depending on the blockchain and trading setup, bots may use transaction-priority mechanisms or higher fees to try to have their transactions processed quickly.

The goal is generally to enter a position as early as possible, before other market participants.

Are Sniper Bots Risky?

Yes. Sniper bots can expose users to significant risks because trades may happen with little or no manual review.

Potential risks include:

  • Rug pulls: Developers or other parties may remove liquidity or sell their holdings, potentially causing the token's value to fall sharply.

  • Honeypots: Some tokens are designed so that users can buy but cannot easily sell.

  • Malicious or restrictive contracts: A token contract may contain functions that restrict transfers, blacklist addresses, change fees, or otherwise affect trading.

  • Extreme volatility: Newly launched tokens can experience rapid price movements in either direction.

  • Execution risk: Automated transactions can fail, execute at an unexpected price, or incur significant fees during periods of high network activity.

Automation makes a transaction faster, but it does not make the underlying token or trade safer.

How does self-custody affect sniper-bot trading?

With a self-custody wallet, you control the wallet and its private keys rather than giving custody of your assets to a third party. However, connecting a wallet to an automated trading tool can introduce additional risks, depending on the permissions and transactions involved.

Before interacting with a newly launched token, consider available information about its smart contract, liquidity, holder distribution, and other relevant risk signals.

Where available, Trust Wallet's Security Scanner can provide warnings about certain transaction and dApp risk signals before you confirm a transaction. A security warning system cannot identify every possible risk or guarantee that a transaction or token is safe.
