What Is a Crypto Wallet?
A crypto wallet is an app or device that stores and manages the keys that control your cryptocurrency. It doesn't hold coins the way a leather wallet holds cash — your assets live on the blockchain itself. What the wallet holds is your private keys: the cryptographic proof that the assets are yours and the tool that signs transactions to move them.
Think of the blockchain as a public ledger and the wallet as your signature. Anyone can see the balances recorded on the ledger; only the holder of the matching private key can spend them.
How a Crypto Wallet Works
The wallet generates a private key (usually from a secret recovery phrase) and derives public addresses from it.
You share an address to receive funds — the network records them against that address.
To send funds, the wallet signs a transaction with your private key and broadcasts it.
The network verifies the signature and updates the ledger. The key never leaves the wallet.
Types of Wallets
Self-custody wallets: you hold the keys; no company can freeze or move your funds — and no company can recover them if you lose your phrase.
Custodial wallets: an exchange or service holds the keys for you; access works like a normal account, but you're trusting the custodian.
Hot vs. cold: hot wallets are connected to the internet for everyday use; cold wallets keep keys offline for long-term storage.
