Learn about decentralized applications (dApps), how they work, what role they play in the world of Web3, and how to access them using Trust Wallet.

What is a dApp?

A decentralized application, or dApp, is a software application that operates on a blockchain or peer-to-peer network, rather than relying on centralized servers. Blockchain architecture enables dApps to function without a single point of control, which enhances their security, transparency, and resistance to censorship. Most dApps use smart contracts to enable their operations. Smart contracts are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code.

The rise of dApps has been closely tied to the growth of blockchain technology, particularly platforms like Ethereum, which provide the necessary infrastructure for developers to create these applications. dApps are designed to be open-source and community-driven, distributing control among users through tokens that represent ownership and governance rights. In this article, we will learn what a dApp is and how to explore dApps using the Trust Wallet browser extension.

Characteristics of dApps

dApps use distributed ledger technology (DLT), like the Ethereum blockchain. At the core of every dApp is the use of smart contracts. Smart contracts automate processes by executing predefined rules when certain conditions are met. For example, in a lending platform, a smart contract would manage the terms of a loan agreement between lenders and borrowers without requiring human intervention.

A dApp’s source code is intentionally made available to the public, enabling anyone to verify, use, copy, and modify the code. AsdApps run on blockchain networks, they are not controlled by a single entity or authority. dApps are protected by cryptography, meaning that all data is recorded and maintained in a public blockchain.

dApp users are not required to sign up or create a login; instead, they interact with the application directly on the blockchain. Trust Wallet has its own dApp browser extension that enables users to easily access these dApps.

Types of dApps
